President's Message

So what is WBYA?  For those of you who are either new to the area or your kids are just reaching the appropriate age, WBYA is a community athletics organization centered on equal opportunity for all kids, regardless of ability.  We do not place great emphasis on winning, although whenever you start keeping score the kids quickly figure that part out themselves!   Mostly, it’s about kids learning the many life lessons that organized sports inherently teaches --  Winning as a team, losing as a team, supporting each other regardless of the outcome, and making many new friends in the process.  Coaches are instructed to provide equal playing time for each of their players.  They are also held to a very high standard of conduct, always mindful that they are setting an example for our young athletes.  We are very fortunate to have excellent volunteer coaches who understand what we’re all about, and are very knowledgeable of their respective sports.

Consequently, the kids have fun playing in an atmosphere without the pressure of winning, while still learning and honing their skills.   We take some pride in knowing that some of our young athletes have even gone on to significantly contribute to High School State Championship titles.  No we didn’t teach them everything they know, but we did provide for them a foundation of basic skills and love for the game!

It’s been my privilege to serve WBYA as President the past several years.  My children and I have many fond memories of their days of playing WBYA sports – memories that will no doubt last a lifetime.  If you’re not involved yet, do yourself a favor – talk to a coach or board member to see where you can help.  You’ll be glad you did!
